2011 was full of great performances… It was definitely the year of the Fassbender, what with Jane Eyre, A Dangerous Method, Shame and even X-Men. Similarly, it was the year of La Williams: Blue Valentine, Meek’s Cutoff, My Week with Marilyn. The kids were more than allright in 2011: Craig Roberts and Yasmin Paige in Submarine, the kid with the bike in the Dardennes flick, all the kids in Attack the Block and in Super 8. I also watched dogs steal the show last year: Uggie of The Artist and Arthur of Beginners.  A couple of breakthrough performances: Andrea Riseboroug in Brighton Rock and Elizabeth Olsen in Martha Marcy May Marlene. With Blue Valentine and Drive, Gosling wins hands down the award for coolest dood of 2011. The year also confirmed Tilda’s status as supreme icon with her awesome performance in We Need To Talk About Kevin, and Meryl’s status as the best actress that has ever lived, with The Iron Lady (boring film, but man, she nails it). Also, I loved Christopher Plummer in Beginners, Jean Dujardin in The Artist, Keira Knightley (an actress that I usually don’t care much for) in A Dangerous Method. I thought that Gary Oldman and Peter Mullan were superb with understatement in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Tyrannosaur, respectively.  I’d give a special award for best ensemble to the cops in Polisse. And last but not least, I’d say the most powerful performance of the year came from Olivia Colman for her role as a battered wife in Tyrannosaur
