The Descendants (2011) by Alexander Payne

Not sure why I’m choosing to post the trailer since it’s the reason why I was ready to hate The Descendants with great passion. Turns out, I kinda liked the film… Well, I didn’t hate it.

Very annoyed by the dopey boyfriend (useless prop imo) and the occasional contrived indie-quirky shots (e.g. Clooney’s head popping over the hedge —> irksome). Loved how Payne used Hawaii as a setting where people actually live as opposed to just surf + I was way more interested in the subplot (the selling of the land storyline) rather than the main premise (the hunt for the comatose wife’s lover turning into a family road trip… yawn).

Thumbs up for the exclusively Hawaiian music score.

Clooney’s OK.
