El Perro del Mar - Let Me In

When this tumblrette says of an album that it’s all good, I pay attention. So I went to Spinner and gave the latest El Perro del Mar a full spin. Yep, it’s all good imo2. Which makes singling out one track a rather difficult task. “A Better Love” and “Let Me In” are two great examples of songs that use simple melodic hooks that I get blissfully sucked into.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums - The Battle In Water

This track might not be very representative of the stripped-down, pagan blues they’re known for (check out the awesome “There Is No Light” and you’ll understand what I mean), but me likey so me blogey.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums @ Union Chapel, London, 10 Sep 09

I like Loney, Dear (his second album even more than his first) but what drove me to go see him live was that he was getting support from fellow Swedes, Wildbirds & Peacedrums. I anticipated great things from their live performance and couldn’t wait to witness their mad drumming and haunting vocals combo on stage. I wasn’t disappointed one bit. The venue being a church, the acoustic was perfect for this sort of percussion-heavy act and Mariam Wallentin’s voice carried beautifully well across the room. It got very close to a religious experience — not so much the meditating sort but more of the epileptic trance kind.

First Aid Kit - Jagadamba, You Might

From their beautiful Drunken Trees album. There’s a bit of Alela Diane in this tune.

First Aid Kit - Our Own Pretty Ways        (via indierawk)

More First Aid Kit, [drunken] trees, and awesomely bad sweaters. If you’re not a fan yet, get on the friggin’ bus, son!

I’ve just hopped on that bus. Sweden strikes again. Those two sisters make cool covers (and not just the Fleet Foxes one that seems to be everyone’s favourite), but I like their original songs even more. Beautiful voices and great melodies. I’m not sure about the wooly jumpers though.

Here’s another bucolic rendition: You’re Not Coming Home Tonight, one of my favourite songs on Drunken Trees.

Air France - Collapsing At Your Doorstep   (via tuneage)

I liked this song enough last year but I only gave it a few listens and quickly moved on (as I did from the entire album for that matter). For some reason, I picked up the song again a few weeks ago but this time it really struck a chord and I’ve been sort of addicted to it. Funny how these things go.

The Sounds - Dorchester Hotel

Another pick from NME’s 10 Tracks You Have to Hear. Great song from The Sounds’ upcoming album Crossing the Rubicon. Another one of my Sweden-music-obsessed post.

Sidenote: the song is available as a free download here

There’s also a rather good remix of “City” courtesy of another teen band of the same ilk.

These days, these days. These days I seem to think a lot
about this song. After that post, and that one, let’s hope I’ll find closure with this one.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums - My Heart

What an interesting style these two have. They’re very new to me and I’m loving their Snake album. This track in particular produces a great build up in the last two minutes.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums - There Is No Light

Ok, so, clearly, all I needed today was some mad drumming and strong vocals. Feeling much better now.
