You enter the MoMa’s Tim Burton exhibit by walking into the mouth of a beast, revealing a long dark corridor with six TV screens, each showing a different episode of The World of Stainboy. The sixth and last episode is the most interesting as it gives you a brief history of the character.

Louis Vuitton “Superflat Monogram” video by Takashi Murakami
In my (failed) attempt to find on the web that Murakami video starring Kirsten Dunst, I stumbled upon this very interesting short animation film he did for Louis Vuitton. I really dig the music on this.
Sidenote: I think the little girl is having one hell of a trip.
Fuck Buttons’ “The Lisbon Maru” makes a perfect soundtrack to this Codehunters animation clip. Those anime characters are total bad-asses.
Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox trailer (via nedhepburn)
The trailer feels a bit long, giving me the impression that all the funny lines of the movie have been crammed in those 2.30 mins. But whatever, it does look fun, it’s got a great cast (Meryl Streep’s voice sounds great there), and as far I’m concerned, Wes Anderson can do no wrong.

Trust Wolfandfox to find gems like these. Funnily enough I found myself subjugated by the animation work and the atmosphere of the piece but I was totally confused by the narrative. Wikipedia’s section on the plot sheds some light on that.
The same way Waltz With Bashir was the hit political animation film of 2008 in France, Persepolis was IT the year before. Both came out of Cannes with rave reviews.
The animated film was written and co-directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud and is based on Marjane’s autobiographical graphic novel of the same name (a sucess in France when it was released). The story follows a young Marjane as she comes of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution. It’s important and intelligent work, the black and white animation work is original and fresh, and the film has its funny moments.
Bit of trivia: Marjane’s voice is that of Chiara Mastroianni and Marjane’s mother is voiced by no other than Catherine Deneuve, Chiara’s own mother.
The perfect day
I don’t visit this site nearly enough; probably because I know that every time I do, I end up spending too much time on it. Aniboom’s 2008 Awards feature some really good animation shorts. I haven’t seen all of the top 50 submissions but here’s a handful of shorts I really like:
